What is next after the UPSR result? Many parents are hoping that their children will get a place in the top boarding schools in Malaysia, namely the MRSM or the SBP.

What is MRSM?

Maktab Rendah Sains MARA atau MRSM merupakan sejenis sekolah berasrama penuh yang dibina oleh Majlis Amanah Rakyat (MARA) hampir di setiap negeri di Malaysia. Maktab Rendah Sains MARA (MRSM) telah ditubuhkan di bawah Akta Majlis Amanah Rakyat Bil. 20 Tahun 1966 sebagai satu usaha untuk mencapai matlamat MARA dalam bidang latihan dan pendidikan.? How to apply?

1. Malaysian
2. Bumiputra or non Bumiputra who studying in Sekolah Kebangsaan or Sek Ren Kebangsaan
3. 5As in UPSR
4. Minimum 3A2B for studentsfrom SAbah and Sarawak
5. Active in curriculum and extra curriculum activities
6. Priority will be given for those from the rural area and family with low income

Application form is available at all Pejabat Mara Negeri and Daerah. Please bring along your certified UPSR slip and your birth certificate. RM5.00 will be charge for each form. For more information click here

What is SBP?

Sekolah Berasrama Penuh (SBP) merupakan kumpulan sekolah menengah perdana dikhaskan untuk pelajar-pelajar yang mendapat keputusan cemerlang di dalam UPSR dan PMR. Tujuan asal penubuhan sekolah jenis ini ialah untuk memberi peluang kepada pelajar bumiputera di luar bandar. Ini adalah kerana pada awalnya, sekolah berasrama hanyalah sekolah berasrama Inggeris / ala Inggeris (seperti Kolej Melayu Kuala Kangsar) yang terhad kepada anak-anak Raja dan orang kenamaan sahaja. Namun kini, semua sekolah berasrama penuh adalah sama dan terbuka kepada semua warganegara Malaysia. Wikipedia Malaysia

How to apply?

At the moment student`s admission to SBP are made by the recommendations from the PPD and JPN. Students will be selected base on their achievement in the UPSR and the co curricular activities during their study years in the primary school. You can check it here

I don’t know if the system is 100% “telus” or not. Because from my experience during my school days in the SBP, I can smell and feel that some of the students are not fully qualify for the admission.

To parents who really hope that their children will get a place in either MRSM and SBP, keep praying and hoping. My advise, don’t be so sad if your children has not been offered a place.
